Vemana’s poems on Animal Sacrifice

Vemana is great Telugu philosopher and poet born in mid 17th c AD.  Vemana’s poems are filled with facts and provide practical guidance to life.

1. Animal sacrifice will not yield salvation

Jeevi Jeevi jampi jeeviki veyagaa
Jeevi valana nemi chikkiyunde |
Jeevihimsalakunu chikkunaa mokshambu
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Killing/sacrifice of an animal to god and eat it as god’s offering prasaadam.  Killing an animal will not get moksham/salvation

2. Moksham or salvation is not in rituals, sacrifices but in exploring inner-self

Peru somayaaji penusimha baludaaye
Mekapotubatti medanu viruva |
Kaani kratuvu valana kalugunaa mokshambu
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Yagna or sacrificial rituals prescribe sacrificing goat or some animal. Being a Brahman killing an animal is jeeva himsa and does he get moksham by performing this kind of rituals?
