Vemana’s poems on Illusion – Maaya

Vemana is great Telugu philosopher and poet born in mid 17th c AD. Vemana’s poems are filled with facts and provide practical guidance to life.

1. Everything is illusion and supreme being is the only reality

Aalu suthulu maaya Annadammulu maaya
Talli Tandri maaya taanu maaya |
Teliya needu maaya deenillu paadaayya
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Wife and children are illusion, bothers are illusion, parents are illusion, even self is illusion. The body will not lets us feel the illusion and mystery.

2. Brahma jnanam is eternal

Erukamaalu jeevi entakaalambundi
Chachhi puttuchundu sahajamuganu |
Eruka marachuchotu neruguta Brahmambu
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Who does not have knowledge on Brahma – will circle on life and death many times. Learning Brahmam is the only eternal. Brahma jnanam is eternal.

3. Everything is illusion and who knows it is tatva yogi.

Bratukulanni maaya bhavabandhamulu maaya
Telivi maaya tannu teliya maaya |
Maaya deliyu vaade marmajnudagu yogi
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Life is illusion, relations are illusion, intelligence is illusion, knowing self is maaya. Who knows about illusion is practical yogi
