Vemana’s poems on Miser – Lobhi

Vemana is great Telugu philosopher and poet born in mid 17th c AD. Vemana’s poems are filled with facts and provide practical guidance to life.

1. Miser do not give and do not allow others also to give.

Icchhuvaani vaddha eeni vaadundina
Chachugaani eevi saaganeedu |
Kalpataruvu kinda gacha chetlunnatlu
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

When a miser is near a benefactor/donor – he doesn’t like giving and he may like to die but do not allow helping to happen. Like a thorn creeper under Peepal tree which will not allow any one to relax under it.

2. Miser will do anything which benefits him only.

Kaniyu gaanakundu kadalimpadaa noru
Viniyu vinakayundu vismayamuna |
Sampadagalavaani sannipaatambadi
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Ignore what is seen, ignore what is heard, do not speak out, pretend surprise – He is miser and these are qualities attribute to a disease/fever.

Miser don’t do anything which do not give benefit to him. What all matters to him is money

3. Miser can never become patron/donor

Kukka govu kaadu kundelu puli gaadu
Doma gajamu gaadu doddadaina |
Lobhi daathagaadu lokambu lopala
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

In this world – Dog will never be cow, rabbit will not be a tiger

Mosquito will not be elephant even if its big, miser will not become donor. There are built in inherent qualities of each and they cannot be changed. Likewise a miser cannot become a donor under any circumstances.

Miser can never become patron as his inherent qualities cannot be changed

4. Miser will not give anyone anything

Goddutaavu biduka kunda gompoyina
Palla nooda dannu paala needu |
Lobhivaani naduga laabhmabu ledayaa
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Going to milk barren cow with earthen pot, it will kick and it cannot give milk, like asking is miser is useless

Miser will not give anyone anything whatever may be the cause

5. Miser accumulates wealth, never do charity, do not enjoy only to be looted by others

Dhanamu koodabetti dharmambu cheyaka
Taanu dinaka lessa daachu gaaka |
Tene neega koorchi teruvari kiyyadaa
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

Miser accumulates wealth and do not make charity/patronage, He will not eat but save and save. Like Honey bee who do not eat but keep on collecting honey only to be looted by others.

Miser accumulates wealth, never do charity, do not enjoy only to be looted by others.

6. Never expect a miser to give anything to anyone

Lobhivaani jampa lokambulopala
Mandu valadu veru matamu galadu |
Paika madiginantha bhagguna padichachhu
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

To kill a miser, No need of any medicine but follow another way. Just ask him money and he will die

7. Earning and spending must be done wisely in balanced way

Viduva muduvaleka kuduvagattaga leka
Veravu leka vidhya norayaleka |
Vedalalenivaani nadapeenu ganduru
Vishwadaabhiraama vinura Vemaa ||

One do not spend. Do not save, cannot eat, cannot enjoy, cannot get education, cannot go anywhere is called walking dead body. He is miser and do not think of anything else but money.
